Nvidia reveals the next-gen RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 GPUs: Everything you need to know

Nvidia revealed the RTX 4080 and 4090 today, confirming all the leaks circulated in the last few months. These next-gen cards were revealed at GTC, September 2022 event by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The event was premiered on Nvidia's official YouTube channel.

RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 both were huge successes because of their performance boost over the RTX 20 series. Time will say how RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 will perform over them.

Although, it is obvious from the event that the next-gen RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 will offer a lot more than the RTX 3080 and RTX 3090. Here are some of those upgrades users buying the cards will experience.

Apart from improvement in performance due to hardware upgrades, users will get more in-game graphics improvements like new ray tracing and DLSS features and much more.

What are the specs of the next-gen beasts?

RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 both specs were also revealed today in the event mentioned above. Both cards are based on Nvidia's latest Ada Lovelace architecture.

The RTX 4080 GPU is said to be coming in two variants. One will be available with 16 GB GDDR6X memory and the other will come with 12 GB GDDR6X memory.

The 12GB variant will have 7680 CUDA Cores, a 2.61 GHz boost clock, and a 2.31 GHz base clock frequency. In contrast, the 16GB variant will pack 9728 CUDA Cores, a 2.51 GHz boost clock, and a 2.21 GHz base clock.

The 12GB variant will consume 285W power whereas the 16GB variant will consume 320W. The 12 GB variant will need a power system of 700W and the 16GB variant will need a 750W power supply.

RTX 4090, will be the top-end next-gen card, offering 7680x4320 (8K) resolution like the RTX 3080 but coupled with much more FPS. The card will come with 16,384 CUDA Cores, a 2.52GHz boost clock, a 2.23GHz base clock, and 24GB GDDR6X memory. 3090 will consume 450W power and need a power system of 850W.

What's new in the RTX 40 Series cards

DLSS was a feature introduced by Nvidia to boost performance by adding additional frames from the RTX 20 series cards. Jensen Huang introduced the DLSS support in RTX 40 Series too but this time much improved than the previous generation cards.

Powered by the new fourth-gen Tensor Cores and Optical Flow Accelerator on GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs, DLSS 3 uses AI to create additional high-quality frames. DLSS samples multiple lower resolution images and uses motion data and feedback from prior frames to reconstruct native quality images.

The 3rd gen ray tracing cores of the RTX 40 Series delivers an incredibly detailed virtual world like never before. Its RayTracing simulates how light behaves in the real World.

How much performance will RTX 40 series deliver in gaming?

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080, as mentioned on Nvidia's official website, will give twice the FPS of what RTX 3080 Ti gave in Microsoft Flight Simulator and Warhammer and thrice of what was achieved in CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077.

The RTX 4090 performs twice what RTX 3080ti gave in Microsoft flight simulator and Warhammer and 4 times of RTX 3080ti in Cyberpunk 2077.

How much will the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 cost?

The 12GB variant of RTX 4080 is listed on Nvidia's official website for $899 whereas the 16GB variant of RTX 4090 is listed on the site for $1,199. The RTX 4090 is listed on the site for a price of $1,599.

After RTX 4080 and RTX 4090, fans now await the official confirmation of the RTX 4060, RTX 4070, and RTX 4050.
