The Process of switching from Android to iOS is not the most difficult thing to do. But yes, you do lose out on a lot of things.
1. WhatsApp Is Annoying!
- The first thing that you are going to lose when you switch to iOS is your WhatsApp chats. Yeah, say goodbye to them because on iOS the chats are backed up on iCloud Instead of GDrive and another fact is that all the backups count towards your iCloud storage which was not the case on Android as the WhatsApp backup for GDrive was unlimited.
- Well, you can use some really expensive app/software to transfer your WhatsApp chats but in my case, I just changed my WhatsApp number. So, now, I have a number for when am using iOS and another for when I am using Android.
2. File Management needs work!
- The file management system of iOS is totally messed up. When you’re downloading/uploading something to/from an app like GDrive/photos or any app for that matter, there’s no progress bar in the notification center or anywhere. And it’s really hard to track the progress hence you have to keep that app open until the process completes otherwise sometimes iOS even stops the process once you exit the app. Which is absurd!
- The inbuilt file manager is also not very good. You can’t find stuff you have downloaded from something like WhatsApp/telegram in the file manager. Although the media shows up in the photos app but the documents and stuff don’t show up. It gets really annoying sometimes.
- Attaching media to an email is fine but when you’re attaching documents, you first have to save that file in the files app and then attach it. I mean, like, why??? I have already downloaded it once. And yes, it’s the same for chat apps like WhatsApp, telegram, etc.
- Transferring files to your computer if you use anything other than MacOS is a very tedious process. I have already made a video about this for windows users, you can check it out from the card above.
- Transferring files via the lightning port is also pretty slow specially if you work with large files.
3. Customization is Pain!
- Customization is a big part of why I love android so much, being able to change the way your phone’s software looks according to your needs is a pretty amazing thing. With iOS 14, apple did make it possible to customize the home screen of your iPhone to some extent, but it is also broken just like the file management system.
- First of all, it’s so hard to setup custom icons on your home screens and then you have to deal with the shortcuts app which basically creates multiple instances of the app and that sometimes breaks the apps. For example, when I customized the home screen of my iPhone X for a brief moment, I had multiple instances where the twitter app opened up in a completely new instance where my account was not logged in, so I had to close it and re-open the shortcut. And it gets really annoying if it happens multiple times in a day.
4. Oh, the Keyboard!
- The keyboard has a completely new learning curve, and it doesn't have haptic feedback plus it doesn't even let you keep the number row on top permanently!
5. Trying to navigate? Good Luck!
- I also don’t like how the gestures work on iOS, especially the back gesture where you to swipe from the left of the screen only to go back. But also, the gestures to pull down. Notification center and control center. It’s fine for me on the iPhone X but am thinking how difficult it must be for people with small hands to do the same on the max iPhone.
- There’s no clear all button in the recent apps menu. And the notifications are also quite messed up still. I mean, you have to open the app to reply to something, you can’t really reply from the notifications. Which is something I used to do a lot.
6. No More Freedom!
- You also loose the option to install apps from 3rd party stores like you do with apk’s on android. Which was a big issue for me because I use an app called as Tubemate to download YouTube videos on my phone, but that’s not here anymore. And a few more apps that I use regularly were not available on the App Store. Some things like this will definitely annoy you.
7. No Ports to worry about!
- The lack of usb-c also means that i have to buy new dongles and adapters to use my existing accessories. Also, the charging is so much slower via lightning.
So, yeah, these are some of the things that annoyed me the most on iOS when switching from Android and it might be the case for you too.
8. A few Good things!
- The things I like about iOS is the smoothness of the UI and how all the devices in the apple ecosystem talk to each other to complete tasks & share data across devices.
- Also, Apple’s focus on providing the privacy controls right in the palms of the user means no app can access your data unless you want them to. And even if some app is doing it with your permission, you can easily turn that off. Pretty empowering, I would say.
- A pretty cool thing I discovered is that whenever a call arrives and the phone is ringing, as soon as you pick it up the ringtone volume just dials down automatically. It happens even when you’re holding the phone in your hand & a call arrives. The ringtone volume stays really low. Which is very nice to be honest!
9. Specific Things About the iPhone X!
- The only thing I hate about the iPhone X as of yet, is FaceID which gets really annoying when you’re wearing a mask. But it’s very fast and reliable otherwise.
- Overall, this phone is a pleasure to use. It’s very smooth till now, runs on the latest software although some features are missing due to the older silicon. It’s a 4-year-old phone now, and when you consider that, The iPhone X runs way better than most android phones from that era.
- The cameras are also fine, nothing to boast about but just good enough to use in your day-to-day life.
- The display is not that great honestly. I have seen much better displays out there. But yeah, it’s pretty good, gets plenty bright outside and has good color reproduction.
- The stainless steel + glass body has held up quite well over the last 4 years. Although the previous owner was quite rough with it. This design was a revolution in Apple’s design history and still the latest iPhone follows the same design cues. So, it’s quite something.
- Using this phone is a treat, the 5.8” display is the perfect size for me as it is big enough to watch content and small enough to comfortably use with one hand. And I absolutely love using it.
- My phone’s battery has been replaced recently straight from apple, so, I’ve got a 100% in the battery health department. And it lasts me an entire day of usage, which is very surprising considering this phone only has like a 2700mah battery. But it’s pretty good. I charge it overnight with my iPad’s 12W charger. And in the last 2 months, I haven’t seen a single drop in battery health percentage yet.
And that is everything which I have experienced while switching to an iPhone from an Android device.
